Obelisk Circumnavigation '08

"Supposing is good, but finding out is better." -Mark Twain

(Very Rough & Early) Proposed Route

Of course, this is only a "wishful thinking" route map--we will have to reconcile our desired route and destinations with a number of factors, including prevailing winds, ocean currents and seasonal weather patterns.  Only once we take into account all the variables will we be able to determine our actual route.

Major Ocean Currents

Prevailing Winds by Month

Distribution of Storms by Season

The seasonal distribution of tropical storms around the globe will have a huge effect on our route planning, as well as the timing of our extended stays in port.

Antipodal Maps

Some purists hold that a true circumnavigation is not complete unless it passed through two antipodal points along the way.  Antipodes are two places, diametrically opposed to each other,  that can be connected by a straight line through the center of the earth.  Below is an example of two antipodes we will visit along the way.

Original Point:  Strait of Gibraltar

Antipode: Whangarei, North Island, New Zealand
